Reporting on the national investigations of undeclared labor in 10 European countries, this study analyzes the variety of forms of black labor in the construction industry. From the evidence of the reports, the highest incidence of undeclared labor relates to work carried out by workers in addition to their regular job. Depending on education and years of experience, Construction Foremen earn every bit of the $ 40.00/hr, or higher, that they are paid. They can expect to work 60 hrs/wk with time and half overtime for everything over forty hours a week. You do the math.

“When construction was about to resume in 1876, the builders discovered that the foundations were inadequate and the monument was sinking and tilting. To stabilize and straighten the Washington monument, wider subfoundations were constructed to a depth of nearly 37 feet.”

Yes, photographs were taken and can be found in the prints and photographs collection at the library of congress under the title “Washington construction photographs”
